Sally Brown has Cerebral Palsy and has been a bike rider for almost 50 years. She founded Every Kid Mobility, Inc. in 2005 and partnered with Just Two Bikes to market Adaptive Bikes and pediatric medical equipment.
In January 2007 Brown released her first novel, "The Big Red Bike." The book is the story of Savannah Tate, a nine year old girl who walks with a crutch and rides a bike. |
Below is an excerpt from an interview by Brown the day of the book's release
“In July of 2004, I rode in Minnesota’s first Red Ribbon Ride. I made that ride to honor my friend, Ron, who died from AIDS in 1996.
Savannah and her friends began to come to life in my heart that very day. I was already over 50 when I made the ride on my own Big Red Bike whose name happens to be “Sweet C.”
I have Cerebral Palsy and learned to ride a bike when I was eight but, balance was always an issue and no matter how much I loved riding and wanted to do it, it was always a little more scary than it was fun.
For my 50th birthday, I bought a 3 wheel recumbent bike. Still, learning to ride it was work. My friend Jim Mullner, who invented my bike, helped me figure out that I could ride it best using clips on the bottom of my “good foot.”
My life has been different since I have been riding. The story in The Big Red Bike is fiction but, much of
Savannah comes from who I am. Much of her courage comes from who I wish I was.” |
